My Top 5 Purchases During the Pandemic : Improve Work From Home Setup, Improve Your Productivity

Updated: Dec 30, 2021

How many of you spent way too much money on amazon during the lockdown?

As you would have guessed, you’re not alone. While I consider myself to be a conservative spender, I have to admit that I shopped online and bought way more things than I probably would have if it were not for the pandemic.

The good news is that a lot of my purchases have been products that will serve multiple purposes and have had long-term health benefits that can also help you be more productive at work.

Here are my top 5 smartest purchases during the pandemic. I would definitely recommend you to pick up some of these items if you don’t already have them.

For some, this is a no-brainer but for others like me, this wasn’t so obvious at first. You see, it wasn’t until I was forced to stay indoors for long periods of time during the pandemic and lockdown that I realized the air quality in my condo was poor during the winter months, and honestly, it impacted my sleep and overall health. I never noticed how dry the air was during the winter months and I strongly believe it was part of the reason why I felt very sluggish for many days at “work”.

I was skeptical at first even with a friend’s suggestion to buy a humidifier to increase the humidity during the winter months. However, I was fortunate that they gave me an opportunity to try it before investing in one.

After a month of putting my friend’s humidifier to use, I instantly started breathing better, and as result, I slept longer and had deeper sleep cycles. Needless to say, my

productivity at work increased and I quickly purchased my own humidifier.

A humidifier has been linked with several health benefits including reducing snoring, helping with allergies including ease of asthma, and minimizing skin dryness to name a few.

You really can’t go wrong and I'm all in for anything that helps me get better sleep and be more productive at work!

I highly recommend getting a thermostat with a humidity reader or get one built-in the humidifier. This will give you a good idea of the air quality without having to guess, regardless, you will instantly feel better.

Standing Desk Converter

I am fortunate to have a job that allows me to easily work from home however, I didn’t realize how awful my home office setup was. It resulted in back pain and I really didn’t think twice about how long I was spending sitting down.

You see, when you commute to work, you likely walk to your car or public transit including coming in and leaving the office. You may walk to your colleague’s desk to chat, you walk to meetings, etc. As you can imagine, it’s quite the opposite when working from home for most. The extent of your walking is probably from your chair to the refrigerator. Who can relate?

Sure, you can set up a time to make sure you’re going for walks every day but if you’re anything like me, when you get in momentum and being productive at work it’s very easy to neglect because you're not forced to.

If this sounds like you, I highly encourage you to get a standing desk converter. While I encourage you to combine this with your daily walks and exercises, the standing desk converter will literally change your life!

It has helped me tremendously with my back pain and also allows me to stretch and change my posture without breaking my momentum at work.

Also, it’s great being in virtual meetings and being on my feet, oddly I feel more confident and comfortable when I'm standing and presenting.

If you have a bit more on budget, opt-in for a built-in standing desk. I already had a computer desk so the converter was cost-effective and also solved my issue without having to buy new furniture. I see virtual meetings continuing to be the norm so you’ll get many uses out of it even post-pandemic. You won’t regret it!

Computer Desk

Fair, this might sound like the most obvious one on the list but hear me out. I can’t even begin to tell you how many of my colleagues and friends working from their couch or kitchen table.

I understand that for some, space could be an issue and I was guilty of thinking that way as well but trust me, your back will suffer in the long run. If I can fit a small computer table in my condo, you can too. You just have to be creative on maximizing your space effectively and buy a space-saving table if it is an issue for you.

So do yourself a favor and get a proper computer table and stop working from your couch and kitchen table. You will definitely improve the quality of your posture and avoid pain while working from home.

Ring Light

Depending on where you set up your home office you may not realize that you don’t have enough lighting for your virtual meetings. Like I mentioned earlier, I don’t see regular virtual meetings going anywhere anything soon even as we transition back to the office – So if your job requires various meetings throughout the day, this is a small buy that makes a world of difference.

Some of you may be thinking I have virtual meetings but am not required to be on video. While that’s a fair point, having a ring light handy for your more important meetings is going to make you look professional, engaging, and stand out, especially if you are trying to level up your career and get promoted. If that’s the case, do things that make you stand out in a positive light! Again, a small detail that makes a huge difference.

Even if you are in a well-lit area, I found that having a ring light dramatically improves the video quality and for $20-$35? This is a no-brainer. I recommend getting one that clips onto your laptop especially if space is an issue for you.

Portable Steamer

For me, convenience and ease of use is so important and this one is not so obvious but think about it, you’re likely going back to the office or maybe you’re back already. Regardless, the last thing you want to do after being at home for so long is to iron all your work clothes, especially if you have a hybrid work-from-home and office arrangement.

Ease your way back to the office by investing in a portable steamer and quickly steam that one shirt or trouser as needed because it’s quick and so much easier than taking out that ironing board. Besides, it’s easy to carry so you’ll have multiple uses for it when you travel or for that weekend get-away.

My Two Cents

In summary, I have listed 5 of my smartest purchases during the pandemic. These include a humidifier, standing desk converter and/or computer desk, a ring light, and a portable streamer.

Each of these items will help promote health and productivity at work, not to mention being versatile and having the ability to use them for various occasions, not just for your 9 to 5.

The best part is that you can easily incorporate them during or post-pandemic, which will have you adjust quickly to whatever the new normal will be for you.

Which one of these items do you already own or looking forward to trying?
